Martha Aitken is the Assistant Director and a founding staff member of both NUREC and Washington State University’s Metropolitan Center for Applied Research and Extension. Drawing on extensive leadership experience across the nonprofit and business sectors, she provides strategic direction for NUREC’s operations and ensures the successful delivery of its projects and initiatives.

Known for her ability to lead diverse and impactful work, Martha has guided multi-sector teams on Center efforts ranging from local endeavors to multi-state and national projects. She has also supported NUREC Fellows and the publication of their final products.

Since joining WSU, Martha has also served as County Director in two of Washington’s most populous counties, where she led complex, community-focused programs and initiatives. She additionally built a highly regarded professional development program that equips schools, public agencies, and nonprofits to better serve individuals and families living on limited incomes. Her work has frequently focused on expanding equity and access, strengthening communities, and organizational development.
