University of Florida

3 suburban homes in Nassau County, Florida, situated next to a wetland. One home has a water-wise garden.

University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension urban programs support the sustainability, resilience, and quality of life of Florida’s rapidly growing urban and suburban communities, where the vast majority of residents live. As development continues to transform natural and agricultural lands into managed landscapes, these areas face increasing challenges related to water quality, biodiversity loss, pest pressures, and environmental health. As communities along the urban continuum seek fresh and local food options, UF/IFAS Extension delivers programs in home and community gardening that help residents build self-reliance, improve health outcomes and strengthen communities. UF/IFAS Extension delivers solutions for every Floridian by providing  science-based education and technical assistance to residents, industry professionals, and local governments to improve landscape management, conserve resources, enhance ecosystem services in the built environment and to build and sustain community food production.
